The Alamance-Burlington Board of Education will review a proposal at its next meeting to lay off about 60 employees throughout the school system.
The proposal is being made in response to funding challenges facing the Alamance-Burlington School System, ABSS spokesman Les Atkins said.
“While we understand this potential RIF (reduction in force) may create uncertainty for some employees, out of respect for all involved, the district will not be releasing any details or commenting on specifics of the proposal until the board has had a chance to review and vote on the matter formally,” he said.
The proposal will be considered at the board’s meeting Feb. 13. Updates will be provided on the board’s action.
Those who would be laid off have already been notified of the proposal, Atkins said.
Last year ABSS cut $7 million from its budget, but since August the school board has unexpectedly had to spend a total of nearly $25 million on mold remediation after extensive problems were found throughout the district.
In December the school board announced a drastic budget shortfall in money needed to run the district, and Superintendent Dain Butler announced a hiring freeze for all non-teaching positions.
School board members have been publicly calling on the Alamance County Board of Commissioners to do more to help the district, saying that the commissioners diverted more than $17 million away from critical school building repairs and other projects to the mold remediation instead.
