Eastern Alamance High School has hired an Alamance County native as it next head football coach.
Mitch Mitchener will replace longtime coach John Kirby, who announced in February he was retiring after 32 years at the school.
Mitchener has 15 years of experience as an assistant coach, most recently as the linebackers coach last fall at his alma mater of Western Alamance.
Before that, he was defensive coordinator at Eastern Guilford High School from the 2019 season through the 2022 season — when the team advanced to a fourth-round appearance in the NCHSAA Class 3A West playoffs.
Mitchener received his bachelor’s degree at Appalachian State University, where he was a member of the football team from 2006 to 2009.
Eastern Alamance planned a welcoming ceremony for Mitchener at the Tal Jobe Gymnasium on Wednesday, March 27, at 5:30 p.m.
Eastern Alamance is coming off of an 8-3 overall record in 2023.
Under Kirby, the Eagles finished with a winning record in 19 consecutive seasons. They reached double digit wins in 14 of those seasons.
