ELON — The Rhoades grant dance concert will be held at Roberts Studio Theatre, 398 W. Haggard Ave., Elon, on Friday, March 15, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, March 16, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
This 90-minute, research-driven, contemporary dance performance will feature new works by Elon University students Jessica Werfel and Madeline Trigilio.
The grant, from retired Elon University art professor Barbara Rhoades, was made in the spirit of collaboration with those who address creative and cultural endeavors to understand and celebrate the union of creative expression, nature and spirit.
Werfel and Trigilio have each created projects that they have been working on independently for two years. Their works highlight their own interpretation of the union of creative expression, nature and spirit.
Werfel’s “Movement unscripted: The art of improvisation” is a practice-based investigation in improvised movement as a therapeutic approach to well-being.
“I have discovered the growth and healing that the practice of improvisation can hold and am thrilled to showcase the powerful effects that dance improvisation can have on mental health and well-being,” Werfel said.
Trigilio’s “The matriarchy: Stories of womankind” is a 40-minute contemporary dance performance exploring female stereotypes, gender disparities and patriarchal norms in society. “The matriarchy” upsets stereotypes through music composition, set design and movement generation to question and reconsider assumptions about gendered social constructs.
Tickets are free, but only 110 are available per show. To reserve a spot in advance, visit www.eventbrite.com and search for “Rhoades grant dance concert.”
