Drivers should be aware of a new four-way stop at the intersection of Durham and Elmira streets in Burlington.
Previously, there were only stop signs on Durham Street at the intersection. Crash analytics led the N.C. Department of Transportation to install stop signs Wednesday along both directions of Elmira Street as well, according to a press release from the NCDOT.
This project is part of the NCDOT's SPOT safety program, which identifies projects considered to be the most beneficial and feasible.
NCDOT reminds drivers of the rules when approaching this or any other four-way stop:
- The first vehicle to arrive at the intersection has the right of way.
- If multiple vehicles arrive at the intersection at the same time, the vehicle to the right has the right of way.
- If two vehicles facing each other approach an intersection at the same time, both drivers can go straight or turn right. If one driver is turning left while the other is going straight, the driver turning left must yield to the other vehicle.
- Even when drivers have the right of way, they should still remember to use turn signals and watch for pedestrians or other vehicles.
