There’s plenty of overtime to go around in the NHL’s Eastern Conference bubble at Toronto’s Scotiabank Area.
Patrice Bergeron scored 1:13 into the second overtime and the Boston Bruins defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 in Game 1 of the first round of the NHL Playoffs on Wednesday.
Bergeron and David Pastrnak scored a goal and an assist each as the Boston Bruins, who finished the NHL’s COVID-19 shortened regular season as the President’s Trophy winner, awarded to the top team in the league, jumped ahead 1-0 in the best-of-7 series.
Game 2 is scheduled for 8 tonight.
A five-overtime affair between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night postponed the Hurricanes' Stanley Cup Playoffs debut to a Wednesday morning start. Carolina was originally set for an 8 p.m. Tuesday Game 1, until the marathon pushed the contest to the next morning.
Haydn Fluery’s blast over the left arm of Boston goaltender Tuuka Rask evened the score at 3-3 midway through the third period. The goal marked the first in his NHL Playoff career for the 24-year-old Carolina defenseman.
David Krejci potted a rebound past Hurricanes goalie Petr Mrazek 59 seconds into the third period to give the Bruins their second lead of the game.
Boston notched its first lead in the second period when Charlie Coyle put the puck into the Carolina net after Mrazek appeared to have first covered the puck for a stoppage before it squirted loose. Carolina challenged the play for an illegal hand pass that led to the goal, but officials ruled Mrazek controlled the puck to nullify the hand pass.
The loss of the challenge resulted in a two-minute delay of game penalty assessed to the Hurricanes. Carolina forward Brock McGinn answered 21 seconds after the Boston goal by scoring a shorthanded, breakaway goal on the penalty kill, making it a 2-2 game.
Carolina defenseman Joel Edmundson opened the game’s scoring with a first-period goal placed between the blocker and glove of Rask.
Pastrnak got Boston on the board with a goal late in the opening period.
