KERNERSVILLE — Williams High School junior Ryan Motondo finished with a time of 15 minutes, 54.90 seconds to win the individual race at Sunday's NCHSAA Class 3-A Midwest Regional for boys' cross country at Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex, qualifying him for the state championships.
Southern Alamance's Daniel King (16:36.60) finished fifth to punch his ticket to the state championships.
Matthews Weddington won the team title with 43 points, followed by Winston-Salem Tabor (63), Waxhaw Cuthbertson (94) and Charlotte Catholic (118). Those four teams automatically qualify for the Class 3-A state championships, which are scheduled for this coming Saturday at Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville.
Williams finished eighth out of 14 teams with 243 points. Southern Alamance placed 11th with 283 points.
• In the girls' race, Waxhaw Cutherbertson's Madeline Hill (18:19.30) won the individual title.
Hannah Graham (22:02.40) was Southern Alamance's top finisher, coming in 37th place. Lilly Clemmons (24:18.40) was the top finisher from Williams, placing 60th.
Waxhaw Cuthbertson won the team title with 29 points, followed by Matthews Weddington (34), Waxhaw Marvin Ridge (65) and Winston-Salem Mount Tabor (133).
Southern Alamance finished ninth of 11 teams with 233 points. Williams was 11th with 327 points.
